Galapagos Islands

All about the Galapagos’ Scalesia

The Galapagos Islands have several unusual extraordinary species. One of these species is Scalesia, a type of daisy plant that can only be found in the archipelago. Keep on reading to learn more about of what makes this organism so unique.

Height

Scalesia is member of the daisy family, but it is one of the biggest flowers in terms of height.  Their massive height makes them look like trees even though they are not. When looked up close, it looks more like a shrub than an actual tree. Scalesias can grow up to 20 m in height, with a 60cm circumference trunk. They also grow very fast, reaching up to 4 m in its first year.

Abundance

Scalesia only grows on the highest parts of the islands. They are usually covered by epiphytes, due to the high level of humidity. Compared to other plants, this is the most common specie, especially in the Santa Cruz Island.

How They Age

This type of plant ages in a uniform pattern. In other words, all of the Scalesias in Galapagos have grown together and will die at once. In the past, the death of Daisy plant forest has been documented twice. The first one was between 1935 and 1940, still it isn’t clear why it happened. Next mass death of forest was in 1982 – 1983, during the El Niño event. Rain continued for many weeks, so they rotted and strong winds uprooted the whole forest. Since then, a new forest has grown.

Conservation Work

Private and public organizations, along with the Galapagos National Park, monitor invasive species affecting Scalesias, and hold conservation and reforestation efforts. Still there is a lot of work to be done. Now it’s time to start the recovery of these unique, yet fragile, ecosystems. Because of the conservation work done in Galapagos, we are an eco friendly Hotel. We really want future generations to enjoy the beauty of the Galapagos.
