Galapagos Islands

Galapagos’ Seasons

There are two seasons in the Galapagos Islands: the hot season and the dry season. Not only are these seasons making this little piece of paradise more attractive, but they also contribute to a full development of the vegetation and  different animal species. Being a group of islands in the Pacific means that seasonal migration patterns are pretty much non-existent and the islands are simply too far away from any other place for animals to leave. That’s why Galapagos is the perfect spot to visit without worrying too much about the weather.Continue reading to learn more about Galapagos’ two seasons.

Dry season

The weather in the Galapagos is determined mostly by ocean currents. In general, from June to December, the cold Humboldt Current comes from the south and creates an inversion that traps a cold, humid mist called garúa near the ocean. This then creates a fresh and dry climate, with blue skies and temperatures that goes from 22 degrees (71.6 fahrenheit)  to 27 degrees (80.6 fahrenheit).

During this season you can see a lot of species on the islands and the sea, such as: giant tortoises, humpback whales, blue footed boobies, cormorants, oystercatchers, lava lizards, Galapagos hawks, masked boobies, gulls bifurcated, sea lions, lava herons, brown noddies, penguins, etc. Due to the water temperature, it is also the perfect time for diving, surface diving and deep diving.

Hot season

The period between December and May is considered the “hot” season. In December, the trade winds retreat and the ocean currents change, allowing  the entry of the warm Panama Current into the Galapagos, bringing a pattern of tropical climate. In this warmer season, the climate of the Galapagos is more tropical with a maximum of  31 degrees/ 87.8 Fahrenheit to a minimum of 23 degrees/73.4 Fahrenheit.

In addition, the temperature of the ocean is warmer for swimming. During this tourist season you can see a lot of species, such as: marine iguanas, sea turtles, land iguanas, sesuvium ground vegetation, that  changes its colour from intense green to orange and purple, flamingos, white-cheeked swallow ducks, masked boobies, marine iguanas, albatross, footed boobies blue, among others.
